Einstein's theory of general relativity has been extensively tested in weak gravitational fields, mainly with Solar System experiments and accurate observations of binary pulsars. Einstein's gravity is instead largely unexplored in strong gravitational fields, and there are a number of alternative theories that have the same predictions in weak fields and present deviations only when gravity becomes strong. The ideal laboratory for testing strong gravity is the spacetime around astrophysical black holes.
In this talk, I will show how we can test the strong gravity region around astrophysical black holes using the electromagnetic radiation emitted from the inner part of their accretion disk. I will present RELXILL_NK, which is the first X-ray reflection model for testing the Kerr metric, as well as some preliminary constraints obtained with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Swift data.
