Abstract:
With advancement in the technologies that have enabled a dramatic increase in observing
capabilities in recent years, the studies of galaxies are becoming ever so detailed and the
progress is rapid. On the other hand, it is increasingly clear what meets the eyes is, by no
means, the entire picture. In particular, the outer region of a galaxy, where the interplay between
the accretion from large-scale structures and baryonic feedback processes originating in the
galaxy might play significant roles, is hardly observable at present, depriving us of the important
boundary conditions that are required to fully solve the puzzle of galaxy formation and evolution.
Theory is far ahead of observation in this case, predicting the presence of X-ray-emitting hot gas
in the circumgalactic medium, which may contain a sufficient quantity of baryons to explain why
the baryon fraction of a typical galaxy (like the Milky Way) is far below the cosmic average.
However, much of what goes into theoretical models is quite uncertain; the lack of relevant
observations is severely impeding the progress of the field. In this talk, I will describe the
theoretical scenarios and the unresolved issues, and discuss why a dedicated effort is needed to

address the issues and what are required of such an effort.


崔伟,清华大学天文系教授,美国物理学会会士。
1987 年毕业于中国科技大学,通过李政道先生主持的 CUSPEA 项目赴美留学,于
1994 年获得威斯康星大学(麦迪逊)物理博士学位。研究生期间开展了 X 射线微
量能器技术的首次研发及其在空间天文的应用,获得了 NASA 团队荣誉奖。毕业后
入职麻省理工学院空间研究中心,参与了 RXTE 卫星的建造、测试和运行,再次获
得了 NASA 团队荣誉奖,并用该卫星提供的数据在黑洞研究方面开展了一系列工作
并取得了重大成果。2000 年入职普渡大学,2009 年成为终身教授。在此期间,参
与 VERITAS(伽马射线)与 LSST(光学巡天)天文设施的设计与建造,曾任
VERITAS 软件系统负责人及实时数据采集与分析子系统负责人。2011 年受聘为中科
院粒子天体物理重点实验室和高能所粒子天体物理中心首席科学家,指导“慧眼”
卫星地面应用系统的设计及建设工作。2018 年全职回国,提出并推动宇宙热重子
探寻(HUBS)卫星项目。已在清华大学天文系建立低温探测器实验室,致力于超导
X 射线微量能器及空间极低温制冷机技术的研发,为 HUBS 卫星的研制奠定基础。
现在的科研兴趣主要在星系生态环境相关方向。至今发表论文 266 篇,H 指数 66。
